The
Evolution of Telephony:
Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow? Communications have come a long way since the cave drawings of early man. But, they haven’t come as far as our grandparents thought they would when they created Twentieth Century sci-fi books, plays, and television shows like “The Jetsons.” While the World Wide Web has hinted at providing us with Internet telephone services that go leaps and bounds beyond what Alexander Graham Bell developed early in this century, it has failed, so far, to deliver the clarity, consistency, and convenience that Americans have come to expect of their communications media. So, what’s holding back the advance of telephony? What is telephony, anyhow, and what might it become? Will Internet telephoning replace Ma Bell’s progeny – or enhance them? This web site will host articles and other resources to address the ongoing evolution of the world of telephony, with a particular focus on telephony as it relates to what is commonly known as Internet telephoning or Web phones. Questions, suggested links, and article ideas are welcomed. We also invite your contributions to our “Tips on Using Internet Telephony” and our “Saint and Sinners” Page. Afterall, there are a lot of winners and losers out there as far as software and services go: we’d like to spare our readers some of the trials and tribulations we have encountered in trying to leverage and enjoy this still-emerging industry.
